“Paranormal Investigations With a Twist” By Jackie Tomlin How do you merge the world of science and the metaphysical into one? This is considered “risky” at large. My name is Jackie and I am the founder of Central Virginia Psychic Development and Paranormal Research. We are not an occult or a covenant. We are a group of spiritual people. We come together as Baptists, Catholics, Methodists, Wiccans, etc., with our own beliefs. Bottom line, we are a group of “believers”. Even though we carry the belief that everyone is psychic to a certain degree, with skills that can be developed. As psychics, we know the other dimension exists. However, we are still skeptics in the world of paranormal activity. I work as a full time psychic for a variety of online services as well as I perform readings at local businesses. Others in my group also have the ability to communicate with the other side, as well as picking out the “hot spots” in a location. We are still skeptical in “physical activity”. When approached with a paranormal investigation, I am always asked the question of “Will you get rid of it”. Some do not wish to get rid of “it”, as they view it as friendly or their own personal protectors. They are seeking the scientific answers that it is not their imagination. Others may deem this as an entity or a spirit that has not crossed over, and yes, they do want to get rid of “it”. So how then does a paranormal team that can scientifically prove the paranormal, and does not carry the belief in psychics or the metaphysical, use science to have a spirit cross over? How do they end their investigation at this point? These questions I do not have the answers to. Our paranormal investigations offer a “twist” in the final report. The scientific side of the investigation in what we can prove, as well as the metaphysical point of view. Offering two sides of the spectrum.

“EVP’s in a Paranormal Investigation” By Jackie Tomlin EVP, meaning Electronic Voice Phenomenon. During a paranormal investigation we run what is known as an EVP session. Basically, this is done by sitting together as a group and taking turns asking questions. Most of the time we do not hear any answers, this is where what we refer to as EVP recorders, come into play. The EVP recorders that we prefer are digital. Going with the same concept that digital cameras capture more than film cameras, the digital recorders appear to pick up more than cassette recorders. When played back on our computer software you will generally hear a voice providing the answers to your questions. Sometimes the voice is audible and clear, and sometimes we have to amplify the recording in order to understand what is being said. We do however prefer, to keep the original sound file intact. There are times that we will get a distinct noise instead of an audible voice. EVP’s are hard to prove or discredit scientifically. But even my own members who may not have been in the room at the time of the recording, they are still described by most as … UNBELIEVABLE!

With so many paranormal shows on television nowadays, it appears that paranormal teams are popping up all over the country. I myself am the founder of Central Virginia Paranormal Investigations. It is a job in itself to present your team to the public as professionals and not a group of people running around at night with flashlights and cameras. But the legalities of an actual team go even further. To begin with all my team members have criminal background checks on file. As well as General Liability Insurance is expensive. Not all teams take this route, but you have to remember that you are entering businesses, private residences, plantations, and historical sites. The application process that each team member went through to be part of us is extensive. One of the biggest part is our Member Agreement which contains all of our by laws that must be upheld. In addition to upholding our Safety Policy and keeping their medical information up to date with the team. The legalities also include information releases from our clients as well as written permission to investigate. For the teams that do not carry insurance, I hope that you have a general liability release in place. Please be leery of letting anyone into your home without the proper paperwork in place! Bottom line, the hours are long, there is generally no pay, the paperwork is extensive, and the insurance is expensive. Advertising, purchasing and maintaining equipment is a major expense. It can take hours in reviewing evidence that we have collected from an investigation, but we love every minute of it. What is the definition of paranormal? Simply stated it is something that cannot be explained. My name is Jackie and I am the Founder of Central Virginia Paranormal Investigations. The investigation requests that we receive vary in nature. They range from things that go bump in the night, to televisions that turn themselves on, odd shadows, noises that are unexplained, voices, items disappearing, and the list goes on. These are just a few of common paranormal activity reports. Our job is to either credit or discredit these instances. Everyone holds the ability to “spook” yourself. Our findings are showing that in the majority of cases this is not the case at all. We are able to obtain proof that the other dimension does exist right here. It may be a case of they didn’t choose to cross over. Spirits are known to attach themselves to homes, land, pieces of furniture, and yes even people. They may even linger to deliver a certain message. Don’t ever give in to this is just your imagination as it happens more often than people realize. This does tend to pose the question of is there more of an awareness to the paranormal because of TV? Or, are the dimensions actually moving closer together? Though the issue of orbs is considered to be controversial, there are certain things that I look for in reviewing photos. “Stand alone”, orbs are the ones that capture my attention. Or orbs that “seem out of place”. Orbs have been around since photography began. I invite all of you to take the time to review any old family photos you have around the house. The problem seems, that when you take your film in to be developed a lot of these photos were discarded. Today I use a 35mm camera in conjunction with my digital camera on an investigation. People have approached me with two different instances with cameras in which I have tried both. The first, “Is it possible to catch an orb on a digital camera without the flash”? The second, “Can you catch an orb on a film camera”? The answer is “Yes” to both of these. Even today when I have my film developed I have them place a note on my order that I want EVERY picture; no matter if they believe it has a flaw. Ghost or Spirits come in many forms, sometimes they are unseen but you can capture an object moving. Sometimes they appear as aspirations or take the form of an orb. When a spirit leaves the body, it would then best be described as “Energy”. To capture several orbs in one shot, I consider these as being abnormal, and generally viewing them as dust particles. Particularly if you are approaching an undisturbed area, even of a few hours. And yes, this is also possible inside, but more probable outside. These orbs have fine lines or rings on the inside of them. Halloween night, is considered by some as the most magical night of the year. The term Halloween actually came from the “All Hollows Eve”, on the Celtic calendar over 2000 years ago. This represented the “summers end”, and the turning point for which the dark phase of the year begins. The Celts believed that during this time a window opens where the spirit world could come in and mingle with the living. It was a night when the dead returns to visit with family and loved ones. From the Irish folklore we have the jack-o-lanterns. The jack-o-lanterns were used as a light for the lost ghost of Jack, a trickster, stuck between the dimensions. It is said that because of his pranks he was denied access into Heaven. Having angered the devil he was also denied access to Hell, leaving him trapped between two worlds. Also noted that they generally made their jack-o-lanterns out of turnips, later, it was the United States that started using pumpkins. It was various religions from Christians, Roman Catholic and Pagans that have bought in witches, black cats, and skeletons. It was the Pagans in Europe who started the practice of “souling.” Souling meant going from door to door to solicit gift of food in return for prayers for the dead. Today, in the United States, we celebrate Halloween with costumes, pumpkin carvings, haunted houses, trick or treating, and Halloween parties. This is a wonderful time for all, young and old. This is also a “magical” night for paranormal activity and psychic readings. To All Readers Whether you have children or not, please be advised that Halloween falls on a Friday night this year. Over time I have noticed the controversy in different paranormal teams regarding the scientific and the metaphysical. I have to ask this, why not use both methods? My team, CVAPI (Central VA Paranormal Investigations) recognizes and uses both methods. I see no harm in this. I work as a full time psychic so of course we recognize the metaphysical. BUT, those psychic abilities are not utilized during an investigation unless the client requests it. Now of course I will share with my team what I “pick up” on as well as they will share the same with me. The scientific is used in our research. This helps us further our study of the paranormal. As far as the metaphysical? Those experiences are shared with our clients as just that, experiences, they are not documented as evidence. As you probably know the equipment of a paranormal team is pretty extreme. From varying cameras with infrared to various EMF Meters, recorders etc. What is the harm if they also want to play with the pendulum and dowsing rods? I see no harm in it at all. (The only thing I don’t allow is the Ouja Board, as this tends to scare people.) For years I have listened to the metaphysical cannot play a part of the paranormal. What I believe people fail to recognize is that most metaphysical people use some sort of spirit in their lives everyday. The majority of the people on paranormal teams have recorded their own experience at some point in time. I doubt seriously that their experience was scientific. Psychics have been ridiculed for years, but yet they are asked by paranormal teams to find the “hot spots”. Even the most popular team in America today claims that they do not believe in psychics nor do they use them for investigations. But in turn, their paranormal magazine offers an entire Psychic section, as they feel the two worlds go hand in hand. Bottom line it takes an entire team to run a full-scale investigation. Whenever you combine a group of people together, there will always be varying opinions and beliefs. I consider myself as one of the lucky ones. My team has the varying beliefs and opinions. These also respect one another and work well as a team. Some of the scientific aspects have ruled out the metaphysical. While vice versa some of the metaphysical has ruled out the scientific. The end result, we all have an open mind to look at both points of view. As well as both points of view can be presented to the client, in which they absolutely love!

Many people today are seeking advice from psychics. Although this is a subject rarely discussed at work or with your family, the interest level appears to be high. I work as a full-time psychic nationally and internationally. My clientele includes celebrities, fellow psychics, blue-colored workers, and next-door neighbors. I would like to share some insights into what to look for and what to expect if you are considering a psychic reading. The Gifts There are a number of aspects to consider when seeking a psychic reading. First, you will want to consider what type of reading is best for you. Psychics have a variety of gifts. Familiarizing yourself with these gifts can help you choose. A clairvoyant has the psychic ability to see images. A tarot reader works with tarot cards. A medium communicates with the other side. An intuitive works with Spirit and the ability to feel emotions. An empath has the ability to pick up one’s emotions or the emotions of a situation. Some psychics are able to give you timelines connected with their reading, while others cannot. This is an important aspect if you want to know when a given event will come to pass. There are many genuine psychics out there who may have all of these gifts, and others who have just one or two. Do not hesitate to ask psychics up front what their strengths are. A genuine psychic has no problem admitting where his or strengths and weaknesses lie. Most are willing to answer questions about their gifts and experience in a simple email. How to Prepare It is best to prepare a list of questions before your reading. This will keep you from kicking yourself after the reading when you remember all the things you meant to ask. If you have no specific questions, that is also okay; most psychics do not mind doing a general reading. Most importantly, relax. Many people receiving their first readings are uptight, tense and completely stressed. This is a result of your fear of the unknown, and it is perfectly normal. Remember that psychics are human beings, just as you are. There is nothing to be afraid of and nothing supernatural about them. They posses a natural gift and are there to assist you with the answers you seek. The more relaxed you are, the easier it will be for your psychic to read you. The Reading Thanks to today’s modern technology, you may now obtain a reading from the comfort of your own home. There are many psychic services available online by purchasing minutes up front or paying by the minute. If you’re home with family around, email readings are always a great alternative. Many psychics have websites, giving you many options. The old days of charges being applied to your phone bill are pretty much gone. If you decide to use an online service, be sure to investigate their screening process. Some sites allow anyone to sign up to provide readings, while others test their psychic abilities. During your reading, do not hesitate to ask questions on points that you feel need clarification. You should never leave a reading feeling confused or unsure that your question was answered. Be aware that most psychics will not answer questions regarding your health. For one thing, the services we work for may not allow it. Another reason for this is that psychics can only tell you what they see. A lot of times health- related issues are not revealed; I believe that is a sign that we are not meant to know about them. Pay attention to the amount of detail that your psychic is providing you. It should be personal and pertain directly to you or your situation. Make sure you are not receiving a generalization that could apply to anyone. You have the right to end a reading at any time. Always end your reading by asking: “What do I need to know?: Most people forget this question, but it is a lot different from general queries and things you merely want to know. Beware Unfortunately, there are a large number of psychic scams out there. Keep these dangers in mind when seeking a legitimate psychic. This begins with the fee they charge. A higher price does not necessarily mean a better psychic, just one who makes money more quickly. Steer clear of any psychics that try to sell services such as curse or hex removals. Also beware of anyone who is trying to put fear in you. For example, “If you do not purchase these candles and crystals, things will not come to pass for you.” Be very leery of anyone who requests payment via Western Union; there is no recourse if you want your money back. PayPal is a safer bet for online transactions, as they work the same as a credit card company. A psychic should never ask for money to continue or for anything else once your reading has begun. You would be horrified to learn how much money some of my clients have lost through scams. The numbers are staggering, and the offending practices include everything from spells to buying supplies to remove negativity. I have one client who lost several thousand dollars to psychics outside of the country. These psychics generally tell you that you must send cash “right away” or something negative will happen. Beware of psychics who send letters, good luck charms, and such in the mail. I have seen these come from very well known psychics. Again they are playing on your fear. Though the communication appears to be personally addressed to you, it is a form letter that many people receive. Beware also of psychics who offer to reveal winning lottery numbers. If we knew the lottery numbers, I can assure you that we would play them ourselves. Here again, I believe we are shown only what we are allowed to know. In the event that you are scammed by a fake psychic, please contact your local authorities and the IRS, and report them to anyone who will listen. Scammers give legitimate psychics a bad name. The Addict Psychic readings can become addictive in a very short amount of time, and there are organizations that treat psychic addiction the same as treatment for gambling or alcohol. I have helped a few clients get into these programs. From what I can tell, psychic addiction generally starts with a person calling several psychics; one after the other, until they reach the one that tells them exactly what they want to hear. This should never be your purpose when obtaining a reading. Always be willing to accept the truth in what you are being told. Show Respect Please remember and respect that being a psychic is a chosen profession and career. Do not ask to “test” your psychic to see if you connect. If you clean houses for a living I am almost certain that you would be unwilling to clean my house for free to see if I was satisfied. Psychics have to cover their expenses the same as any other business: taxes, health insurance and so on. As a professional psychic, I am not there to pass judgment on you or anything you wish to discuss. Your reading remains confidential. Psychics generally work the same schedule as you with varying hours. One difference maybe that I absolutely love what I do. Keep in mind that we are truly there to help you. However, we are unable to sum up your life in three minutes! In the End A psychic reading should be an insightful and pleasurable experience. I take great pride in the regular clients I obtained by not telling them what they wanted to hear. You should walk away from your reading feeling uplifted by the fact that you have obtained answers you sought. I am often asked how long you should wait to obtain a follow-up reading. Some choose to wait until everything has come to pass. Some may want insight on a different situation. Only you can make that decision based on your own judgment. Remember that not all psychics are scam artists; there are some really good ones out there!

I fully believe that most of us carry some type of psychic ability. Some often wonder about it, while others are tuning in and trying to develop their abilities. Bottom line is this in not a topic of conversation that you hear about too often. I have spoken with many that report “seeing” things in their sleep as in a premonition. I have had a lot of reports of those that experience “DeJaVue” often. I have heard stories from people whom have had an “out of body” experience. I have also heard many reports from those having near death experiences and seeing “the light at the end of the tunnel.” These experiences have left people wondering. Are they gifted? Did it really happen? I believe those that possess a natural gift can develop those gifts to help others. The first step comes from acknowledgement. The second step comes from embracing the gift as well as acceptance. I also believe that another step is learning the difference in the gifts. For those that have had these experiences I encourage you to contact me and share your stories. It actually happens to people more often than you may realize. I have also found this to be true for those that have paranormal experiences. I have found some that have traced their heritage and found that they have a psychic in their family bloodline. I also feel that some may not have any psychic abilities in their bloodline, but indeed have come from a near death experience. I myself work as a full time psychic under the nickname of Ms Swami. I am clairvoyant, meaning that I see things happen before they actually happen. I also have a passion for the Tarot. There are many tools out there that people seem to have an interest in. Anything from divination tools such as a pendulum and dowsing rods, to working with Tarot cards. I don’t believe that most people realize that the Tarot can be learned by anyone. In addition the possibility of actually developing clairvoyant skills lies there as well. I have found over the years, that there are many different books on the Tarot. Each book can give you a different meaning to each card. I am in process of writing an e- book as a simplified form to learning the Tarot. In addition, I will be offering online Tarot classes this fall for those that are interested. I would also like to add that in working as a psychic, if you met me, you would not know that I am a psychic. I am very average person the same as you. I don’t have bats as pets or live in a castle or dungeon. I don’t dress differently or wear big bulky jewelry as some have envisioned. People who have had experiences, whether they are a developing psychic, or have had a paranormal experience are very normal people. You would be surprised at how many are college educated and working professionals. This is the very reason I was prompted to start my Meetup group. My name is Jackie and I am the founder of CVAPI (Central Virginia Paranormal Investigations). We were featured in July on Richmond’s, NBC Channel 12, investigating a local restaurant. CVAPI is a group of professionals offering our services to homeowners and businesses, free of charge, for paranormal investigations. In this case the Chesterfield Restaurant would be considered a case of confirmation. This is where several have had paranormal experiences and are looking for validation that it is actually paranormal. Paranormal simply stated means the unexplained. The owner and myself chose not to disclose the name of this restaurant. The decision was based purely out of respect of the adjoining business owners and the owner of the shopping center. When this decision was made, neither of us could have imagined the mysteriousness that it gave to Matt Butner’s story of Channel 12. (You may view the original footage here: http://www.nbc12.com/global/story.asp?s=10732579 I can disclose that this restaurant is located in what is known as Chesterfield’s Historical District. There are other businesses in the area with similar reports. We at CVAPI would classify their activity as a “normal haunting”. Meaning they are dealing with human spirits and nothing of a negative nature. This past weekend CVAPI returned to this local Chesterfield Restaurant and opened the doors to the public on a fundraiser extended by the restaurant, to include a breakfast buffet. All of us at CVAPI were amazed at the people that appeared at 3:00AM for a ghost hunt. The enthusiasm was definitely more than high. Joining us was one of our former clients, Norfolk’s Psychic Medium Examiner, Elizabeth Costanzo and her husband Scott. In addition to Chesterfield’s local author Pamela Kinney. Pam is the author of Haunted Richmond and Haunted Virginia. Both reported to have had wonderful experiences that morning and we were delighted to have them present. Our concern was if the location would be active with that many people in attendance. Although audio and video taken this weekend, is currently under review, we were pleased with everyone’s experiences. Disembodied spirits are believed to carry electronic magnetic fields. We measure these fields with various EMF detectors. One of those meters, known as the KII Meter, gave great activity in the kitchen as well as the dining room. Another in attendance reported that her digital camera started taking pictures on its own, and many witnessed this. Overall, we were more than pleased and felt that the disembodied spirits of this local restaurant certainly produced! We do plan to establish another date at this restaurant so we may show what we may have found. Often I am asked, “Does the paranormal really exist?” Followed by, “Is there such a thing as ghosts?” My name is Jackie and I am the founder of CVAPI, Central Virginia Paranormal Investigations. I work as a full time psychic, paranormal investigator, radio host and freelance writer. CVAPI consists of a group of working professionals to help families and businesses with their experiences from the paranormal. Most of the investigation requests that we receive are “confirmations”, that they are actually having a paranormal experience. It is very rare, but we also have a few instances of what we would refer to as a “negative haunt.” I would also like to state that most of our clients are working professionals as well as carrying a college education. When requesting an investigation it is very common for them to state, “I am not crazy.” We carry the utmost respect for our clients in what we release on the Internet. We do not disclose the locations that we have entered without their written consent, nor do we release photos or videos that may contain the family in them. It is important that you can recognize the difference in the different types of haunts. This should be your first step if you want to pursue ghost hunting. I would like to give you the signs of what we refer to as a normal haunt. Common reports including feeling a presence around, unexplained noises, and electronics that power on and off. Also very common are, voices that can be heard, disappearing objects, or seeing something on a consistent basis out of the corner of your eye. Signs of a negative haunt can include the experience of a normal haunt but there are other reports that you should look for. These experiences include physical attacks, reports of being scratched or bitten. You may also hear reports of foul odors or smells, such as decay. With these negative experiences a growling sound is often reported. I do recommend involving clergy in these cases. Ghost hunting is not as difficult as one might think. It does consist of more than running around with a flashlight at night. (Even though that is part of it.) Getting started is fairly easy as long as you know the precautions that you should take. You also do not have to own expensive equipment to get the job done. You would be surprised how many items that you can pick up locally to get started. A flashlight is recommended, with an endless supply of batteries. The paranormal will drain batteries at a rapid pace. Due to this, I would also recommend a small LED flashlight. For whatever reason, the paranormal does not appear to drain these as quickly. You will want to have a camera, either digital or film, or if you prefer, both. If you plan on using a hand held camcorder I do recommend one that offers some type of night vision. The Sony Night Shot seems to work well for short distance recording. Next, you will want to look at an audio recorder. You can choose either an analog or digital recorder. The analog recorders run on small cassettes. If you choose a digital recorder I recommend that you shop the price. There are many different varieties on the market with varying prices. You may already own one of the best audio recorders and not even realize it. The Blackberry. This cell phone has a strong recording device built in it. There are other brand name cell phones that are pretty close in quality of the recordings. Your recordings are known as EVP’s. (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) For your audio review I would recommend “Audacity” software. There again, be careful. This is a free download to everyone. There are sites out there that sell this software. Spirits are considered to project magnetic fields. There are many EMF (Electronic Magnetic Field) meters on the market today. Most have to be purchased online. If you are seeking an EMF meter, I would recommend ebay or Amazon. If an EMF meter is out of your budget, you can purchase a regular handheld compass from your local camping section. A compass will spin, the same, as an EMF meter will spike. CVAPI carries an extensive amount of equipment to include a nine channel DVR with nine IR cameras. This is not a requirement to get you started. If you find that this is what you want to do, then this would be a good long-term investment for you. As I stated earlier there are certain precautions that you should take when ghost hunting. First, never hunt alone. Take someone with you and let someone know when you plan to return. I cannot stress enough to stay away from abandoned houses, as tempting as they may seem. First of all, I am sure you do not desire a trespassing charge. Second, abandoned houses come with abandoned wells. In addition some of the flooring and stairwells are not structurally safe. Also, do not enter a cemetery at night without written permission. Most of them close at dusk and you can be charged with trespassing. In addition to determining what type of haunt you are dealing with, you will also want to know what type of spirit you are dealing with. A human spirit generally appears in the afterlife as they did in their human life. If they were aggressive, unhappy and disgruntle in their human life, that has not changed now. If it is something of the supernatural, rest assured that they have supernatural strength. Something of the supernatural puts yourself, the family and your team in danger. This is why I cannot stress enough that you should never provoke a spirit. When running an EVP session by asking questions, please remember that this is also a form of provoking. Show respect in what you ask. Do not demand an answer or action. CVAPI consists of members of varying religions. I only ask that each member do what he or she chooses in order to protect him or herself. We have had instances of something following them home. As a professional psychic, I am very discouraged in the amount of people that utilize the ouja board. This is a source of communication and an open door to the other side, good and evil. I do not recommend them, and I certainly would never recommend them being used in any haunted location. If you are seeking to use something of the metaphysical realm, dowsing rods are a safer bet. You do not have to be a psychic to be a ghost hunter. My abilities are primarily used when entering a location. I am checking to see if it is active, a human spirit, and if it warrants an investigation at all.  The psychic industry, unfortunately, appears to be full of scam artists these days. The stories I hear from my clients are disheartening to say the least. If you have been scammed, please feel free to share your story. Some of my clients are out of thousands of dollars in which they will never recover. Here are a few helpful tips to let you know if you are being scammed. 1. They are trying to instill fear in you. 2. They want you to purchase items such as candles, crystals, etc. or something in your life will not come to pass. 3. They are requesting to be paid via Western Union (there is no recourse in getting your money back) 4. They are trying to sell you lottery numbers. (If we knew the lottery numbers we would play them ourselves!) 5. They have referenced Curse or Hex removal. 6. They want to charge for aura cleansing or negativity removal. 7. DO NOT send cash to a psychic either in the US or another country! (I have heard of many scams associated with this practice.) 8. Beware of letters that appear to be personally addressed to you. (I have seen them from some well-known psychics; they are in fact a form letter in which everyone receives.) 9. DO NOT pay for spell work. (If it is a spell you seek, do it yourself, you have no guarantees that someone did this for you. And KNOW what you are doing! Be careful what you wish for as you just might get it!) Remember that you as the client have a right to end a reading at anytime. If at anytime you feel uncomfortable, then it is time for your reading to end. Readings are meant to be informative and a pleasurable experience. A psychic reading should be pleasurable and insightful. It should be personalized to you and your questions. If you are seeking a psychic reading, I would recommend that you familiarize yourself with the different gifts in order to get the best reading possible. Some psychics have many gifts and some have one or two. By knowing the difference in the gifts, you can get the most out of the type of reading you want. A clairvoyant is someone who is “clear seeing”. They actually see things that have either happened or things that are coming up. I would best describe this as actually watching a video of some sorts. A clairaudient means that they are “clear hearing”. They can actually hear messages that are being relayed to them. Some say that they hear messages through their spirit guides, and some say they hear messages from angels. Another form is to actually “hear” what is going on, when they are viewing the clairvoyant video. An empath is someone who can pick up on people’s feelings and emotions. They can actually feel the situation that they are reading. They also carry the ability to read other people’s emotions and feelings. An intuitive means that they are using their intuition. This is a “gut feeling” type of sensation. Most of us are intuitive to a certain degree, but choose to ignore what we are feeling or being pulled towards. A medium is one that has the ability to communicate with someone on the other side. This is someone you would consult if you were trying to connect with a loved one that has passed. A tarot card reader actually uses tarot cards. There are a lot of psychics that prefer to use some sort of divination tool. They can range from tarot cards, runes, pendulums, crystal balls, and tea leafs to name a few. Do you live in an active location? Do you pay attention to your pets? Meet Sasha Marie, (pictured) she is my nine- year-old Siberian husky and probably one of the best pieces of paranormal equipment that I own. Animals have a tendency to see things that we as humans cannot. They also have stronger senses than we do, particularly regarding the sense of smell. Even science, being as advanced as it is today, still prefers to use cadaver dogs. The reason is simple; a dog’s sense of smell is stronger than the humans or any machine that they can create. Regarding the paranormal, animals have a tendency to “stare” at something that we cannot see. Another example is that they will appear to follow something with their eyes. Is it possible that they can actually see an energy orb? Through our experiments at CVAPI, we believe this theory may be true. Animals appear to see exactly what our infrared cameras see. You may also notice that if something tries to take form, it may scare them, causing them to run and hide for no apparent reason. What did they see? It also makes you wonder that maybe they didn’t actually see anything, possibly a sense that alerted them. Do they have an imaginary friend? Does something speak to them causing them to tilt their heads? It is proven that animals can detect barometer changes in the atmosphere. You may notice this with your pets in an upcoming thunderstorm. They seem to notice before the storm actually hits. Barometer changes and temperature changes on paranormal investigations are very common. These experiences do not just apply to pets that are kept inside of your home. Pets that are kept outside as well can very well notice these changes. This even applies to barnyard animals. Are they scared to enter the barn? Would they rather be outside in the rain verses coming into the home or the barn? To most people, your pets are also your family members and become your children. Located in downtown Richmond’s Oregon Hill historical district, North of the Robert E. Lee Bridge, sets one of Richmond’s biggest tourist attractions, Hollywood Cemetery. Hollywood takes its name from the grove of holly trees on the grounds and sold its first gravesite in 1849. Among the gravesites you will find two of our countries Presidents, James Monroe and John Tyler. As well as the President of the Confederate states, Jefferson Davis. Hollywood is also the home of several of Virginia’s Governor’s, as well as Richmond’s elite. Some of the birth dates date back to the 1700’s. Originally beginning as only 14 acres, Hollywood now sprawls over 135 acres, the home of over 60,000 burials and 18,000 soldiers. Some locals refer to it as the “Little Arlington Cemetery”. Hollywood is an active cemetery today, with reasonable rates comparable to other cemeteries. I was looking forward to what my senses might tell me about Hollywood. My team, CVAPI, and I took a tour of Hollywood on what I would best describe as the perfect fall day. It was overcast, windy, and 62 degrees, the perfect setting to roam among the holly trees at Hollywood. We have heard so many ghosts’ stories of Hollywood Cemetery we decided it was time for us to take a closer look. In September of 2003, Hurricane Isabelle came through Richmond with drenching rains and wind gusts of over 100 mph. Isabelle claimed over 200 trees in Hollywood and the cemetery was actually closed to the public for 3 weeks. Roaming through Hollywood today, you would never know there had been such destruction that occurred there. The amount of varying trees is huge in size and varying in height. In one low laying area, where at one time there was the reflection pond, cypress trees cover that area with their great height and width. This is a breath taking view as the cypress rarely grows in Virginia. As we head to the Confederate Pyramid, free standing at over 90 feet tall, built with granite from the James River, and among 18,000 soldiers, I have the feeling that we are not alone. In consulting with my team, we could all agree that we felt this would be an active part of the cemetery. Proceeding through the center of the cemetery, I find it hard to put the view into words. The leaves were changing, a slight wind blowing and a feeling of serenity. As well as the feeling that we were being watched by someone that we could not see. The cemetery itself tells its own story with each family plot. There are several infants and children buried in Hollywood due to the lack of immunizations. There were varying heights of the tombstones, with some of them seeming endless. The draping over the tall stones signifies the end of life. Swords on the tombstones facing right side up meant they served in the war. Swords that were placed upside down meant that they had died combat. An upside down torch represents a life that was extinguished too soon. The sign of the Mason’s marking some of Richmond’s elite. Another thing that we noticed is that some family pets are buried in the family plot. This is still allowed today. If you looked close enough you could read each family story. Hollywood is privately owned and operated and the most unique cemetery I have ever visited. They do not allow artificial flowers of any type. Therefore the gravesites are covered with varying trees and live plants and live flowers and truly a beautiful site. One particular gravesite with a huge angel as the headstone caught my attention. The grave had a live rose bush planted on it. It was in full bloom with white roses, even though it was the middle of October and we had already been through a frost. The presidential circle is located on top of a hill overlooking the James River and Belle Island. The crypts of Hollywood are varying in shapes and sizes. I will have to say I have never seen that many crypts in one cemetery. After our initial tour and familiarizing ourselves with the cemetery, we then decided it was now time to take a closer look to see if we could prove anything paranormal there. There are several stories of particular gravesites at Hollywood that people have reported as being haunted. We decided to take a closer look at these first. This included a popular gravesite of a cast iron dog, that watches over a small girl’s grave. Our findings proved nothing. We decided that we would take the time to run several EVP sessions throughout the cemetery. EVP stands for Electronic Voice Phenomena. These are audio recordings taken with digital recorders and analog recorders. Where most have found that digital cameras pick up more than a film camera, we have found the same to hold true with the digital recorders. Generally during an EVP session were we are either standing or sitting and asking questions, nothing is heard by the human ear as far as answers. These recordings appear as we upload that information onto our computer software. EVP’s generally fall into one of three classes. Class A, means that the recording is clear and audible. Class B, means that the recording is audible when amplified. Class C, means that when the recording is amplified we can hear something, however we cannot determine what it says. Noise or knocks of any kind are not considered to be EVP’s. We always like to keep the original recording in tact if possible. When listening to EVP’s I highly recommend headphones or ear buds. These can be picked up rather inexpensively and truly make a difference in listening for the EVP’s. Sometimes they are clear, but are faint in volume. On this particular day, my team was able to capture five Class A EVP’s throughout Hollywood Cemetery. It was kind of odd. Even though we felt the presence of being watched in different areas and not being alone, we heard nothing as the recordings were taken. The presence that I personally felt I would describe as being protective and watchful. I never felt threatened in any way. It was a perfect fall day in a lovely cemetery. However in the review of our EVP’s I would describe them as being eerie. This has put a new way of thinking what may roam Hollywood Cemetery. At best, I can say this has just intensified our interest in Hollywood and what unknown residents may roam there. I still have the impressions that the Spirits there are protective. Possibly of each other, their families or Hollywood itself. Sometime in the near future, and between investigations, my team and myself plan to return there to finish our exploration of the paranormal. The photography taken there that day showed no abnormalities. However those photographs were breath taking and I would describe them as resembling post cards. To my readers, please be advised that we entered Hollywood Cemetery during operating hours during the day. There are strict criminal penalties in place by the State of Virginia to those who enter a cemetery after dark. Please never consider this as an option without written consent from the owner! Also while visiting a cemetery please be mindful of the age of the tombstones, show respect for the gravesites, and make a donation in maintaining the upkeep, this will always be greatly appreciated. As a psychic I can tell you that you can capture just as much in a cemetery as you can at night. I do recommend when visiting any cemetery that you take a closer look. Learn the history of the tombstones and you will be able to reveal the family’s stories that are buried there.

It is very rare that CVAPI (Central Virginia Paranormal Investigations) will disclose where they are going or where they have been. Last night, they met with real estate agent Kimberly Ann Calos of Prince George Realty, to investigate one of her historic properties. Marie Colby from Missouri also attended last night’s investigation and is the Co-Founder of the National Coalition of Ghost Hunters (NCGH). According to Kimberly, there is a percentage of the market that hopes that these older homes are haunted when they purchase them. This house has sat abandoned for the last eight years. It is located in Petersburg, Virginia’s, Folly Castle Historic District and was built in 1810. The house is structurally sound with the original moldings and fireplaces, offering three full stories and a basement. At one time, it was a bed and breakfast in Petersburg. It is in need of heavy renovations, and currently has no power. It is on the market for $129,000.00. The only way to see if it is actually haunted was to conduct an actual paranormal investigation. The investigation was broadcast yesterday on WRVA 1140AM, as well as NBC Channel 12 and WRIC Channel 8 were there last night. CVAPI arrived at the location at 9:00PM to set up for the investigation and stayed until 2:00AM. Thanks to their sponsor, Patriot Auto Exchange out of Hopewell Virginia, in assisting with adding to their cable system, they were able to reach the third floor with their IR camera’s with ease. Even with no power in the location, CVAPI was able to run a full-scale investigation. They chose to run four of their nine IR cameras, DVR, and monitor, aided by a running car outside of the location. The evening was spent running night vision, audio recordings, EMF (Electronic Magnetic Field) detectors, and digital and ambient thermometers. It will take several days to analyze the footage. Just because the home was built in the 1800’s does not mean that it is haunted. CVAPI also spoke with a next-door neighbor where their property adjoins this location and was actually built in 1762. They report no paranormal activity at all. There were several personal experiences throughout the evening by those who attended including the real estate agent and the homeowner. CVAPI will take a scientific approach to the evidence that they have gathered before they can actually say whether or not the location is really haunted. There are many people, who have at one time or another sought out a psychic reading. What prompts them to? More so than curiosity, it is their need to know. It is usually a question in particular that they are seeking an answer to. All humans have a natural curiosity. However, when certain events in your life transpire the need to know seems to intensify. It can pertain to excitement, as in a new job or a promotion that you are looking for. Or curiosity of how your holiday travel and your time spent with loved ones will go. More often than not, that need to know is always there in every one of us. Generally it seems to be triggered by events as things change in our life each passing day. Job stability, divorces, and foreclosures have seemed to become popular on the list of that need to know. When should you not know? When it pertains to your health. Most psychics, including myself, do not offer health readings for this reason. Another reason is as a psychic, if it is pertaining to your health and something that we should not know, then it will not show us anything. Through the economic crisis, I have seen that financial questions are on the rise. Surprisingly though, still the number one question in “the need to know” category, is pertaining to love and relationships. It appears that even when times are good and when they are bad, people think it is easier when they have someone in their love life. Above, I have addressed some of the basic categories that people “need to know” when seeking a psychic reading. What I want to emphasize is that people forget to ask this most often in a psychic reading. What do you “need to know”. This can be a lot different from what you are asking. Sometimes you are made to go through bad experiences, in which, in turn will make you a stronger person in the end. Do you know how to manifest your desires and make them a reality? Manifestation is your ability to draw to you, what you want by visualization. It does not require an endless amount of time in meditation. It is strictly manipulating your thought process. For instance, we all go through bad spells somehow this cannot be avoided. What I am referring to is your mind set when this occurs. If you are feeling negative thoughts, or thoughts of dread, then this will stick with you longer than you realize. How many thoughts do you have in a day? Simply stated, thoughts trigger your emotions. Like anything else manifestation is a learning process. For some, it comes fairly easy while others have to practice for some time. In this learning process you learn to control your thoughts and emotions such as dread, lack, fear and worry. When upsetting occurrences happen it is time for your thoughts and emotions to take control. Will you overcome or be overwhelmed? Even when faced with obstacles the positive thoughts must lead. Emotional feelings will then become intention. Accept that power into your life and you will be surprised at how quickly things will begin to turn around. I have seen many that make manifestation posters. They are used for your long-term goals. I highly recommend this for those that have a problem with visualization. Where do you want to be in your life this time next year? What are you aiming to accomplish? Now that we are closing out the year, it is time to start your manifestation process for 2010. There will be times that you will loose sight or your focus. It happens to all of us, as we are human. Once you realize this, redirect your thoughts and emotions. Try to keep them positive with feelings of happiness and good. Remember that what you are thinking about is what you are attracting to you. Paranormal teams are on the rise today across the country, including the state of Virginia. I think we can credit television for most of this. Each team runs by their own set of rules and protocol. The question here is what comes first. Is it your interest for the paranormal, or a family in need? It takes a lot of time and organization to run an actual paranormal team. I have found that there are many teams forming nowadays that have no protocol whatsoever. There are several that carry the paranormal interest that are spinning off groups with no knowledge other than what they have seen on television. Does this help a family in need? Due to the lack of these teams structure, CVAPI receives several requests across the state where other teams have stood a family up. Disheartening, but very true. Equally disturbing are the ones that are performing “Psychological Evaluations” on their clients to see if they feel their claims are credible. What exactly is a credible claim of the paranormal? The paranormal simply stated, means the unexplained. Most of our clients do hold “trends” to their claims of the paranormal. This falls in line with human spirits as well as negative haunts. For clients that have a claim that you are unfamiliar with, this is where your “research” should come into play. CVAPI has worked with teams that know how to investigate, but these teams have done nothing in regards to their research. EVP’s (Electronic Voice Phenomenon), these are our audio recordings in the paranormal field. Is it possible to catch one on a cell phone? The answer to that is YES. Particularly in regards to the higher end phones such as the IPhone and the Blackberry. Recently CVAPI took on a case where another team had stood up a family. In contacting that team, we were told that they did not find their cell phones claims to be credible. I find this perplexing that someone could be that narrow minded when researching the unexplained and claim to want to learn more. As it turns out, not only did the family have legitimate evidence of audio on their cell phone, but they also had legitimate video and photos. This has also turned out to be a haunt on the negative side, with two children in the household that were left with no help by a team that did not view their claim as credible. The paranormal in Virginia is extensive, as we are the oldest state in the country, very rich in history. There are several teams out there that investigate nothing but historical locations. Many teams have no interest in private residences. So if you are a family in need, you yourself will have to research what team you choose to assist you. Take a closer look at their websites. Are they running psychological evaluations? Are they investigating historical sites only? Do they run ghost tours? Over the years I have performed several thousand psychic readings. The number one category across the board for all psychics is love and relationships. Everyone has questions regarding their love life. The questions range from being in a relationship, to recently meeting someone, or waiting to meet someone. No matter what the circumstances, there is some generalized “red flags” that you should be aware of. I say that because over the years I have only seen a small percentage of these circumstances turn into actual long-term relationships. Now granted this is a generalization, but it remains that I have only seen a small percentage materialize. I also want to mention that my client base is split down the middle between men and women. All of these circumstances apply to both. 1. The three-day rule. The three-day rule applies to those that have recently started dating. I receive many calls where someone has been out on a date and has not heard from the person in several weeks. The only reading that I can refer to that actually materialized was when one of them was hospitalized from a car accident. That later did develop into a relationship. 2. No contact for several years. I have performed a numerous amount of readings were someone starts to wonder about a love from a long time ago. Generally, they don’t even know how to find the person or if they are even in the same state. This is cliché but true, “Time changes people”. “The person that you once knew may not be the same person today”. Again, a slim amount of these circumstances have materialized. 3. Long distance relationships. A few of these have materialized. ONLY if there is travel involved on both parts and a plan for the future. For example, if one lives on the East coast and one on the West coast, and you see each other once a year, the likelihood of something committed and long-term for the two of you is not good. The relationships that do survive these circumstances are military deployments. 4. Married or living with someone. You are wasting your time and it’s time to move on. I hear a lot of excuses from my clients as to why they believe this will actually materialize. I even have some that are engaged to someone that is married, even though I am unsure of exactly how that works. The relationships that I have seen materialize in these situations have ended on a “trust factor”, go figure. 5. Friends with benefits. This is a HUGE red flag. For every reading I have performed on these situations, someone ends up developing feelings and wanting more. For those that have ended up in a relationship, those relationships are “rocky” and not on solid ground. 6. Magic and witchcraft. Again this is cliché, “Be careful for what you wish for as you just might get it”. These relationships run really hot and turn very cold, really quickly. I have seen some disastrous results in these situations. 7. It is time to see other people. Do you really need to contact a psychic about this? It is obvious that one person does not feel the same as you. 8. Email relationships. This is NOT a committed long-term relationship. Never has been, and never will be. I have never seen one materialize. These are some signs to look for if you are looking at getting involved with someone. This can be interpreted in two ways in which I will discuss both. First, can a psychic frighten you? Yes they can. Unfortunately just the name “psychic” has a bad reputation in the industry. This stems from the numerous amounts of psychic scams in the industry today. A psychic can scare you by instilling fear in you. There are many scam artists out there that will tell you something will not come to pass unless you pay them for additional work. This has happened countless times to many of my clients, as well as to other psychics that I know. It leaves you to wonder what will happen if you don’t. The other form of fear is for those that possess psychic abilities. I have seen many people with a great amount of psychic abilities that suppress them. They suppress them because of the fear of the unknown. This has been a common trait of most working psychics today at some point in their life. It can be a frightening and overwhelming feeling when you are able to see what is to come. You can feel anxious because you feel that you have no control over the situation. But more so than anything you can feel all alone in the fact that you are the only one able to see it. There is also a certain fear in discussing these experiences with anyone, for fear of people deeming you as crazy. More so than anything there can be the fear of the unexplained and why it is happening to you. The majority of psychics can trace their psychic abilities in their bloodline. For those that cannot, it is not uncommon that they have had a near death experience at some point in time. Another frightening experience is for mediums that have not fully embraced their gifts. A medium has the ability to communicate with the other side. It is a frightening experience when you do not consider yourself a medium and are approached by someone who has passed. For whatever reason, for those that seem to suppress it, it appears to get worse. It is very common for psychics and mediums to have some recognition of their gifts in their early teenage years and their early twenties. This is a trying time in your life without the added gifts. Over the years, the word psychic has become more acceptable than what it used to be in the past. However, if you are having these experiences it does not make it any easier to talk about. Over the years I have received many reports of “phone calls from the dead” from my clients as well as relatives. These are actual phone calls that seem to come in from someone who has passed on. Generally appearing as distant voices. Most recently, my newfound friend, in which I will refer to only as “Dave” has had these experiences as well. These calls seem to come from a brother that has passed. The caller ID shows unknown name and unknown number, and the voice appears distant but can be recognized with personalized messages. Dave has a high interest in the paranormal and his brother knew this at the time he passed. So is it possible this is the reason? Although I have had numerous reports from clients that have never had a paranormal experience, and have contacted me because they were left dumbfounded. One of the questions that I am asked most often, is why do the calls come into only one family member? Is it because they are more open to it? As a psychic, I believe the answer to that is “Yes”. I also believe that there is no spirit out there that was related to you, that will intentionally scare you. As a paranormal investigator, common reports are small appliances that will come on and off. Most common reports are televisions, stereos, microwaves and VCR’s. Some of those reports do include a phone that will ring and no one is there. Other reports are phones that will only ring once or twice. I, as well as other members of CVAPI, have personally witnessed some of these events. On two separate occasions I have seen a dead cell phone begin to charge on its own, witnessed by others. Are phones an easy source to manipulate by the spirit world? Can our loved ones speak to us through the phone where they can be heard? On more than one investigation, we have had voices come through our hand held radios so I believe at this point that it is possible. The direct phone calls are not only personalized messages, but the person receiving the call immediately recognizes the voice. It is common that the caller id reads unknown name or private number, but I have had reports of a phone number that used to belong to a family member long ago. The inspiration for this article comes from one of my readers, Chelsea. With so many classifications and titles that the psychic industry is using, things can become very confusing. I want to start with the word “Counselor”. This can be looked at in a couple of different ways. An actual “Counselor”, should carry the extensions for a psychologist. The word “counselor” in the psychic industry can mean nothing more, than someone you spill your problems to. The other two words that appear to be commonly used are “Spiritualist” and “Life Coach”. A spiritualist is someone strong in his or her belief system. This seems to be common for those that work with spirit guides or claim to perform angel readings. Although they can be ordained, this does not make them fall into the line of clergy in the psychic industry. A life coach is pretty much the same as a counselor. This is someone who is there to listen to you and support you. There are no special accreditations for this. In the psychic industry there are several words that can describe ones gifts. For example, a Tarot Card Reader is not necessarily a Psychic. This is someone who is gifted with working with the cards and their interpretation. The Tarot can be learned by anyone. An actual psychic is one that is clairvoyant. This means that they are clear seeing, and clear hearing (clairsentient), they are able to see your future and what has occurred in your past. The other two words that you will find in this industry are “Intuitive” or an “Empath”. An intuitive is someone who follows their gut feeling, where an empath is one that picks up on other’s emotions. Are these psychic abilities? Like most psychic abilities they can be strengthened with practice. A “Medium” is one who communicates with the other side. I might want to add here that not all psychics are mediums. “Animal Cognition” is simply one that communicates with animals. I personally am in complete disagreement of all the certificates that are available online today. You can receive a certificate on almost any of these given words by paying to take a class. Last night I was on the themixtalk.com. (We will be back next Tuesday night at 9:00PM). We had a caller, Kimberly from Virginia who asked a wonderful question….”With all the psychics out there nowadays, how can you tell if they are legit?” I want to go a little further with this… As with any industry, it is scary to see how many scam artists are beginning to surface. There are ways that you can research a psychic. This applies to if you find them online or locally in your area. 1. How long have they been around? If they have been around for awhile, this needs to be taken into consideration. A lot of scam artists come and go rather quickly. 2. Can you validate their credentials? If they claim to have certificates, degrees, or organizations they will generally have a live link to validate their claim. 3. What does Google say? Try typing the psychics name or stage name into any search engine. If you only have the first name try entering the word “psychic” in front of it. (If it comes back with a Ripoff report, then there is your sign!) 4. What if they are local? Do they have a business license within the county or city they are working in? You can either check with the county or city or ask them to show it to you. (Be careful of the ones that are reading out of their homes…some are legit, but there are usually strict licensing laws pertaining to this.) 5. What if they are local and have no website? Then this is just scary. Most businesses have a web address of some sort available to the public. It is also a “red flag” if they only work for Psychic Services. 6. How do I choose a psychic on a psychic service? Start by LOOKING AT THE SERVICE. I will not name them but there are TWO major psychic services on the web where ANYONE can be a psychic. Don’t get me wrong, because there are legitimate services out there that do test their psychics. HOWEVER, there are a lot of psychic services that advertise on the WHAM board. (Work at home moms) As well as some sites that offer various scripts for them to read…Scary isn’t it? 7. Did they ask you for your birthday? Unless you are seeking an astrology reading, I have REAL issues with this. It is too easy to give a “generalized reading” of your zodiac sign. Remember you the client have a right to choose, walk away, or end any reading at anytime. Here are some key words to look for: Cash or Money Order, Western Union, Negativity surrounding you, Aura Cleansing, Hex or Curse removal, Spell casting, They need you to purchase something in order for something to come to pass, Lottery Numbers, or any “claim” that they can change things for you. These are STRONG signs that you have landed a scam artist! You should pay for your reading….and NOTHING ELSE! © 2010 Jackie Tomlin

In all my years of working as an online psychic, this is something I NEVER thought I would run into. I recently left a psychic service for this very reason. The laws on recording phone calls vary from state to state. They are different for corporations as well as the entertainment industry. HOWEVER, it is my personal opinion that it is just WRONG! A psychic reading is very personable and geared towards you and your concerns. If the service is using this for “Training Purposes” then you are obviously trying to train someone who is not a psychic. If they are using this for “Quality Assurance” than you don’t trust your psychic and they should be replaced. Otherwise, it is my personal opinion that it is an evasion of privacy and should be enclosed in the privacy act. As a psychic working for these services, we the psychics are NOT allowed to tell the client that they are being recorded. However, YOU the client, may ASK your psychic if you are being recorded. As a psychic, I have had clients ask if they can record the reading, either by phone or a live reading. I am fine with this as it makes a good point of reference. HUMAN SPIRITS – These are simply people that have not crossed. Their temperament will appear the same in the afterlife as it did during their life. So if they were hateful in life, chances are they are still hateful now. (The same as being pleasant.) CHILD SPIRITS – Yes, they are many in existence. However, there are certain warning signs to look for regarding a child spirit. If a human spirit, they tend to be playful or that of a pranster. DEMONS & DAMNED SOULS – These are the worst types of haunts. Generally causing people to move from the home. They are out to scare you, can cause bodily harm, and tend to break or hide religious items in the home. There are several signs to a demonic haunt to which I will not discuss. THE SUPERNATURAL – Unlike a human spirit the supernatural comes with “supernatural strength”. For example human spirits can shut doors, or move small items. The supernatural has the strength to levitate large pieces of furniture, etc. (Something an individual human would be incapable of.) POLTERGIEST – Though often frightening, it simply means a noisy ghost. Slamming of doors and windows, stomping on the floor, rattling chains. (LOL joking, I haven’t heard chains rattle.) Why are they here? Human spirits can attach to a home or to the land. Some choose to stay while others are scarred to cross. This could be for varying reasons. They may question their faith, or worry they won’t be forgiven, or in child’s instance, just not understand. It is a common misconception that someone of clergy can make them cross. Clergy can reassure them of what is to come and all will be forgiven. It is the choice of the entity. Those of the Catholic faith tend to believe that if there is something here, it is evil, when indeed they can be stuck. Demons and damned souls… If seen they generally, do not have eyes, indicating no soul. They can often manifest as a child or animal in order to earn your trust, there again, your warning would be two hollow holes for eyes. For those living in a spirited home, you can set your boundaries. They tend to be like children, give them something they can do, as well as something they cannot do. For example, in my home, they are allowed to move items, but not to show themselves. (Also note they do NOT cooperate, as in dishes, laundry etc…YEP I have tried!!) Also note, that Virginia Real Estate law does NOT require an agent to disclose to you if someone has died in the home. They have to tell you if you ask directly. Mercury Retrograde hits us a few times a year. One thing you can expect during these time frames is to expect the unexpected! This is definitely not the timeframe to begin new projects. It is also not the timeframe to sign contracts. It is a timeframe that tends to affect everyone emotionally. It is common that feelings of self-doubt begin to surface. Problems tend to surface in relationships of all types from love to family. Unfortunately this timeframe can also extend to ten days prior to Mercury Retrograde and ten days after it ends. There are many who believe that it is also a test of your faith, as things do tend to go wrong. Though it is all in what you believe, I don’t believe that your life should come to a standstill during this timeframe. I do feel that it is a time to be more aware of your surroundings and the decisions that you make. Life lessons will be learned no matter what timeframe we are in. Electronic Voice Phenomenon are audio recordings that are captured during a paranormal investigation. Known as EVP’s for short, they are generally not heard during the investigation but are picked up on our audio devices. Modern technology has enabled the paranormal field to capture voices that are generally not heard. CVAPI has conducted numerous investigations from local businesses to private residences with several EVP’s on file to date. I am including a video clip of some of their favorite audio recordings. All of these recordings were captured locally. EVP’s generally fall into one of three classifications: Class A is considered audible, Class B is considered audible, but generally has to be amplified. Class C is considered inaudible. What we are seeking on a paranormal investigation is direct answers to the questions we are asking. Noises and sounds that are heard or picked up on audio are not considered an EVP. EVP’s are generally captured on our digital recorders or analog (cassette) recorders. They are also captured on our handheld cameras. You don’t need to own a fancy piece of equipment in order to capture an EVP. Matters of fact, most of you own a recording device right now, your cell phone. We have captured some Class A EVP’s on Blackberry’s before. When reviewing your audio files, I highly recommend a good set of headphones. Some of the voices come in very faint while others appear louder. (You will notice this on the video.) By capturing one EVP on several different devices in the room, it allows us to see what device they were closer to. For instance the voice may be faint on one recorder, and stronger on the recorder across the room. EVP’s should not be confused with a disembodied voice. A disembodied voice is one that is heard in real time by those present. Believe it or not, it happens often. Dreams can actually offer information into your unconscious mind. Can dreams contain hidden messages? Sure they can. A lot of dreams stem from what may be on your unconscious mind when you fall asleep. This is a lot deeper than your conscious mind or what you may have been thinking of when you first fell asleep. Unconscious minds are aware of the aspect of our personalities and desires that our conscious mind does not wish to acknowledge. This can actually awaken things in ourselves that we would generally choose to ignore. Over the years, dream theorists believe the reason we dream is to compensate for the parts in our life or personalities that we would consider underdeveloped. Technically a dream is nothing more than a hallucination. However there is a lot that one can learn about themselves from them. Dream Interpretation is part of the service I offer as a psychic. I believe that we have all had dreams that can be frightening. As well as wonderful dreams in which you hate to awake. Dream Interpretation can give you a better understanding of feelings, thoughts and your behavior. Some dreams can appear as a warning for you of what is to come. Dreams can indeed carry signs of you being warned. The most common question that I am asked about is dreams of loved ones who have passed. Though they don’t seem to happen all that often to most, it is very common. In the psychic world, these dreams are considered actual “visits” from that person. It is also common for premonitions to occur during your dreams. This is where you actually see an event that is upcoming. When that event passes, this can leave you with a feeling of de ja vue. Out of body experiences can also take place while you sleep. Otherwise known to some as “astral travel”. This is the feeling of leaving your physical body. There are also dreams that have no meaning whatsoever and are in actuality nothing more than a hallucination. This is common when on medication or you have reached a point of complete exhaustion. Social networks have become increasingly popular these days. It has provided a new form of communication to keep up with friends and reunite with those from our past. What you may not realize is how many psychic readings are performed weekly by your social network status. Social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and MySpace have taken the guesswork out of what you are doing. Who is watching what you are doing? Practically everyone. As a full time psychic, I can personally tell you that I perform a wide variety of readings based on people’s social network status. What drives people to a psychic reading is the constant need to know. Psychic readings can give you insight on what is to come and what you can expect. Social network statuses allow people to question things that they have never thought of before. For instance, what does your profile say about you? To someone that is in that “getting to know” you stage, they can become really disturbed by what they read on your profile. Can everyone see your friends? I have performed more than one reading on finding out that someone has actually dated someone’s friend. What is your relationship status? Wow, this is a sure fire way of getting busted! There is nothing like meeting someone to find them on a social network as married! Like most things on the Internet, there are general safety concerns as to what you post on your social network. I myself am on these networks and am constantly amazed at what information some release. Over the course of the last two years I have seen a significant increase, with each reading I perform there is a reference to one of these networks. A lot of personal information is out there that some may not even realize. Oh yes, your pictures, yes I am asked about them. Who are you with, where were you at and when was it taken! Now don’t get me wrong because my clients are not stalkers. However when involved with someone they are amazed as what is posted for all to see. Also sad, but true, some are learning more about their partners on the Internet than they are in person. When you met someone be honest with them on who and what you are. From your relationship status, to your common interests. Refrain from posting anything misleading on your profile. There are more to these networks than meets the eye. There are many local area businesses out there on these networks that advertise anything from events to specials they are running. Human spirits are the most common type of haunt. They remain here today for a numerous amount of reasons, from being attached to houses or to the land. Human spirits appear the same in the spirit world as they did in life, except without their physical body. They can be pleasant or they can be bitter. It is a misconception that clergy can make a human spirit cross. Clergy can certainly assist in communicating with the spirit what they can expect on the other side. They can encourage them to have no fear and give them an understanding of what they may not have known when they passed. However they cannot make them cross if they choose not to. CVAPI recently worked with clergy on the request of the homeowner. We were told that it is very common for some human spirits to be apprehensive in crossing over. Some cross at a later time, while some choose not to cross at all. Across the board, not just in Virginia, CVAPI has found that there is a shortage of clergy that are willing to assist those with paranormal concerns. We have found that there are many families in need that will request clergy, or would like to have clergy counsel them. Though we have been fortunate enough to find clergy willing to assist those in need. We keep a constant call for clergy posted on our website. Each psychic appears to be different and works with their own set of ethics. How do you find the ethics of a particular psychic? Research them by the Internet, blogs and their websites. Just like there are differences in psychic gifts, there are differences in how psychics operate. Some work out of their homes where they have clients come in, some are online psychics, some are in flea markets, or work by appointment only. Psychics are people too, and with that said they operate with their own set of ethics. I have met some that operate by a strict code of ethics and some that it appears that anything goes. There are varying opinion across the board as to what is considered ethical. They are just that opinions. Like most businesses, there is no certain standard a psychic has to operate by. There are several things that I don’t agree with. I don’t agree with charging for spells or spell work. I don’t believe in charging for house clearings or house blessings. And I certainly don’t agree with charging a family in a missing person’s case. There again, these are nothing more than my opinions and some of the ethics that I work by. What if you cannot determine the ethics of a psychic? Then ask. Just like anything else, if your paying for it, ask questions. The same that you as a client has a right to end a reading at anytime. Like everyone else, psychics come with varying religious backgrounds and beliefs. They can range from Christianity, to Wiccans. If spirituality is a large factor in choosing your psychic, there again, just ask. Most are willing to discuss their spirituality no matter what their beliefs. Bottom line there is no code of ethics that psychics operate by. Even as a full time psychic I find this a bit disturbing in hearing some of the horror stories from my clients. I am often asked if all hauntings are the same. The answer to that is, “No”, Though some can show some similarities, it all depends on what type of haunt you are looking at. CVAPI (Central Virginia Paranormal Investigations) have certain signs we look for before classifying a haunt. Most don’t seem to realize that there are different types of haunts. It is depending on the nature of the haunt as to how CVAPI will proceed. Some of these include human spirits, child spirits, the supernatural, damned spirits and damned souls, animals and poltergeist. The most common are human spirits. What is a human spirit? It is the same as a living person without a physical body. Some of these are believed to be people that have choose not to cross. They can appear the same as they did when they were living. If they were a pleasant person, then they are pleasant in the spirit world. If they were hateful and bitter, then they are the same in the spirit world. Why are they here? There are many theories as to why they are still here. We have found some are attached to the land while others are actually attached to homes or to people. Some appear to lack knowledge and are actually scared to cross over. I don’t think we will ever have all the answers as to why they are here. In the same category are child spirits. If human they can appear to be playful and often as pranksters, the same applies to animal spirits. It is common that things of the negative side can manifest as children or animals in order to win your trust. They key here, is they generally manifest with hollow eyes, as the eyes are the key to the soul. People seem to fear the word poltergeist when in actuality is just means a noisy ghost. They can be frightening and very annoying. Though we have been able to document many trends on investigations, there is still a lot that occurs that we have no explanation for. This is a question that I am asked often. The price of a psychic reading can be varying indeed. The best advice that I can give you is to remember, “A higher price does not mean a better psychic.” It is important that you are familiar with the varying gifts of a psychic in order to choose a reading that is right for you. Some of the key words that you will want to research include, intuitive, clairvoyant, clairsentient, and medium. Also familiarize yourself with some of the common psychic scams out there. A psychic reading should be personable and geared towards you, not something to put fear into you. What price should you pay? There are several things that you should consider here. First of all not only are you paying for the psychic’s time, but their energy as well. (Yes, it does take from your energy to perform readings.) Other factors that you may want to consider are that most psychics operate as a general business. With that said, just like any other business they have expenses. From the IRS, advertising to health care. Psychic reading by phone are often preferred nowadays for the convenience. With this service come phone bills and huge connection fees, also well-known business expenses. There is no difference in getting a reading over the phone verses in person. It is the energy that we read. For those that use psychic services or call psychic hotlines, it is important for you to know that the psychic you are speaking to is probably actually paid very little. If it is a service that you choose, than choose wisely! Some of these services actually advertise to work at home moms, where they will make anyone a psychic. Other services go through great lengths to test and verify a psychic. If you factor in all of the above, you can probably determine a price that you would consider “within reason.” This is the best way to determine what you should pay. I am not impressed with psychics that have appeared on television that are now charging anywhere from $100 to $300 for a reading. This is completely taking advantage of people. If supply and demand is a problem, than they should establish a waiting list. Also remember that you should not send a psychic cash or money via Western Union. Sailor’s Creek covers over 300 acres in four different counties. It is the battlefield 72 hours before the end of the Civil War in Appomattox, Virginia. Numerous paranormal reports have come from those who have visited as well as many Civil War actors. The battle took place April 6, 1965. Lee lost more than 7,700 men and eight generals, the largest number of men to ever surrender in a single action on this continent, including his son. Central Virginia Psychic Development and Paranormal Research spent an entire Saturday investigating the Hillsman House and the Battlefield. The Hillsman House was used as a hospital during the battle for both the North and the South. Believed to have been built in the 1770’s by Moses Overton. Passed on to his descendents James Moses Hillman. The Hillsman family did reside in the home at the outbreak of the battle. This family of five stayed in the basement and watched as their home was converted into a hospital and the battle took place literally in their backyard. The bloodstains on the floor have been preserved and forensically tested by the State of Virginia. Some of the bodies from this battle were buried in mass graves, when this became too much they were buried in unmarked graves right were they died on the grounds. …. Our group had two wonderful Park Interpreters Meghan and Lindsey who gave us tours of the Overton- Hillsman House as well as their new visitor’s center. The visitor’s center will offer a new museum of artifacts found on the grounds. EMF’s (Electronic Magnetic Fields) could be picked up by the group in the home as well as on the grounds with no electrical devices around. Some caught some anomalies on photography and some were able to capture some EVP’s (Electronic Voice Phenomenon). It is a misconception that paranormal activity only occurs in the evening hours. Central Virginia Paranormal Investigations (CVAPI), were contacted by a family in the Chester area in regards to a negative haunt. Reports from the family included foul smells, physical attacks on family members, the feeling of being watched by something, and a concern of some recent medical problems. From Jackie at CVAPI, “One of our main concerns is that one of the children had been hospitalized and the family, at that point was ready to leave home.” “The family also provided us with a video of their son, that was concerning.” “The investigation itself was interesting.” “The experiences included a piece of our equipment powering on that was still in its case, feeling the bed shake, digital recorders that would skip, and random smells that were very pungent that would disappear as quickly as they came in.” “Video showed a solid hand during our setup that was not human in nature.” “This led us to seek a demonologist for assistance.” “Although there were some nice orbs captured on the location, this appeared to be something more.” Advertisement “The Maitland family lives in Chester, Virginia and can be best described as the average American family.” “Sarah is a stay at home Mom, her husband, Toby works as an electrician, and a local football coach, they have 3 children ages, 12, 8, and 3.” “All were having experiences, as well as Sarah’s parents and in-laws.” “They have lived in this home for 3 years, however the experiences were now escalating as physical attacks.” When CVAPI got to the investigation, the family was no longer staying in the home. Both Jackie, members of CVAPI, and the Maitland family understand that a lot of what was filmed will be cut due to time constrictions of a one-hour series that will feature three cases. After all was said and done, the family did return to their home moving the children into the master bedroom. In speaking with Sarah, the children are all now back in their rooms as of two weeks ago. She described this as a slow emotional transition. Those nights consisted of Sarah staying in their rooms until 3:00AM or so, playing Xbox until they felt comfortable. In an interview with Jackie, Sarah said, “The last couple of weeks have been a little weird, I’m not certain if it is paranormal, but we are aware of our surroundings.” When asked how the home felt now she said, “Completely different, it is comfortable and feels like a home again.” Jackie directly asked Sarah why did her and Toby agree to go on television with their story. From Sarah, “To help get the word out there that these cases do actually exist, and how it affects a family.” From Jackie, “Paranormal cases are rare and surface about 1 in 20 cases, but they do exist.” When asked how do the children, Hailey, Haven and Evan feel about being on television, Sarah replied,”They are excited and think it is cool.” From Sarah Maitland, “Many have commented that they do not believe the paranormal can affect someone medically.” “I feel that it can.” “I do believe that it can affect you in that physical manner.” Jackie works as a full time psychic and has many experiences as far as how the paranormal can affect your health very quickly. Animal Planet aired a new show on Friday night called Demon Exorcist. This featured a case called The Black Shadow in Chester, Virginia. This is the story of the Maitland family in Chester, Virginia. Sarah is a stay at home mom, while Toby works as an electrician and local football coach; they have four children Hailey, Evan, Austin and Haven ages 12, 8, 6 and 3. From Toby Maitland, “There were many discrepancies in the show and I’m not happy with what aired.” The Maitland case was the case of Central Virginia Paranormal Investigations known as CVAPI, founded by psychic Jackie Tomlin. CVAPI contacted demonologist Dwayne Claud on this case for assistance. The trade off appeared that Dwayne Claud would come in and clear the location in turn for the Maitland’s story to appear on his documentary with the Discovery Channel. The Maitland family agreed to this, as they wanted to get their story out there, so people would understand what families of negative haunts go through. From Sarah Maitland, “The story did not come out in its entirety.” At the time Dwayne Claud was contacted, the Maitland’s had not contacted Dwayne and his team, nor had any knowledge as to who he was. The Maitland family and CVAPI had a concern from the beginning that CVAPI and those that assisted would not get recognition for their work in the documentary. Firecracker Films and Dwayne Claud constantly reassured them that this would not happen. During filming, CVAPI was led to believe that it would air as them reporting the negative haunt to Dwayne Claud, CVAPI’s findings on the investigation and turning the case over to him at that point. The evidence from CVAPI showed an inhuman hand on video to which Dwayne Claud said it was a pukwudgie. (A troll like figure from the woods.) The week it was to air Firecracker Films contacted CVAPI telling them that they had been cut due to time constraints, and thanking them for their contribution. The members of CVAPI were fine with this as long as the family had their story told and the location was cleared, as this is what they do. However they did expect to receive some form of recognition. From Jackie Tomlin, “In the show, they never mentioned “the” paranormal team, or “a” paranormal team, it was indeed portrayed as Dwayne’s case.” “In addition, they did not air a third of the family’s story.” “CVAPI and the Maitland’s were all aware that the show was about Dwayne to portray who he is, for an upcoming series.” “Dwayne and Firecracker Films spent days filming with this family and knew their entire story.” “The fact that they would twist this case to further their careers is just disappointing.” “Everyone had enjoyed working with them.” CVAPI had taken several steps before reaching out to a demonologist. From Jackie Tomlin, “The family contacted us over a year ago.” “We got involved when physical attacks, and hospitalizations began.” “Medium Laura Evans referred Sarah Maitland to myself and CVAPI.” “Sandy Kalaora is who we used for clergy for the house blessing and baptizing the children after the investigation.” “The family provided us with their medical records including psychiatric evaluations.” “They also provided us with photos of the physical attacks.” “The only thing that aired on the show was the video the family provided us with of their son.” “A full history pull of the location was done as well as the geological aspect of the land investigated.” “There were many steps performed prior to just seeking out a demonologist.” The story was produced as Dwayne’s case, Toby reporting that his wife had been raped while Dwayne was there, an investigation by Dwayne’s team, following him clearing the location. This is where the discrepancies come in. While they were here, there was a problem during filming to which Sarah contacted Jackie. The problem was that Dwayne Claud felt that it might be something that Sarah had picked up from Hollywood Cemetery and bought home, they wanted to film her returning it to Hollywood Cemetery. This was indeed the phone call they aired from Toby Maitland stating to Dwayne that he needed to speak with him. This call was not due to a rape on Sarah as portrayed on the show. There was indeed a sexual attack on Sarah Maitland prior to CVAPI’ s investigation in which Toby Maitland was with her when it happened. Sarah and Toby Maitland, as well as Jackie Tomlin were informed by Dwayne Claud that his investigation did not produce anything. They were all shocked when they aired the flickering of lights as well as an orb. In speaking with Sarah and Toby Maitland both were shocked at the picture drawn by their son, Austin, as they had no knowledge of it nor had they ever seen it. The only footage of their 12-year-old daughter Hailey is where you see her back. Dwayne Claud never disclosed to the Maitlands or CVAPI that he felt it was an incubus (A demon that attacks women sexually.) as aired Friday night. This has left the Maitland family to be bashed by the paranormal community as well as their children are receiving text messages from their friends questioning their mother’s rape. It also leaves them with the question of an incubus, a pukwudgie, or something from Hollywood Cemetery? CVAPI currently plans to produce a documentary of this family’s story. From Jackie Tomlin, “This is a family of 6 that lived a complete nightmare causing them to leave home.” “They have a story to tell that is worth hearing.” “The paranormal does exist and demonic cases are very rare.” “We all enjoyed working with Dwayne Claud, his team, and the production team from Firecracker Films.” “It is a shame the case was portrayed this way on television.” “After it aired, we were all glad that CVAPI’s name was not on it.” “Television in general, needs to realize that these cases have actual stories behind them that are worth hearing without twisting their stories or adding fluff to them.” Q& A From CVAPI’s Viewing Audience Q: Where exactly in Virginia was the scene filmed of Dwayne in his car? A: We have no idea. We are all from the local area and cannot say where that was filmed. Q: Why did the show skip around making the story hard to follow? A: That would have been a decision of the production team. We were indeed asked several times by those viewing of what case they were on. Q: Why is the Animal Planet airing shows of a haunting and demonologists that have nothing to do with animals? A: We have no idea. Contracts that were signed by all of us were with Firecracker Films and the Discovery Channel. Discovery Channel owns the Animal Planet; we imagine it would be their decision as to where to air it. Q: If Dwayne’s investigation produced flickering lights and an orb, why would this require a demonologist? A: In normal paranormal cases it would not. There again, the entire case was not portrayed on the show to show why a demonologist was called in. Q: Is it gone? A: Only time will tell. Dwayne did successfully clear the location. The family has had some experiences in which we mentioned last week. Currently they are not giving it any recognition and plan to move forward with another house blessing. This is in reference to The Animal’s Planet’s Demon Exorcist, and the local families case of Sarah and Toby Maitland that aired on the show as “The Black Shadow”. Jackie Tomlin, the founder of CVAPI has mentioned on numerous occasions that the family’s story did not air in its entirety due to time constraints of the show. In return this has left those involved to fall under attack by bloggers across the Internet. From Jackie Tomlin, “The Maitland family and myself are getting emails from one particular blogger and some others on a daily basis.” “This person has cussed at us, called us names, and threatened us.” “These bloggers don’t know any of us that were involved in the show, instead they are gathering what information they can from the web and posting their opinions and twisting stories.” “One has even gone as far as to drag another para celebrities name through the mud to us, in which myself or the Mailtand family have never had contact with.” “That we deem as hearsay, due to what they are publishing about us.” “I addressed this issue the first part of the week on our CVAPI blog.” “The emails and the bashing continue to pour in.” Advertisement One of these bloggers claims to have an upcoming interview on Dateline and has appeared on MSNBC. This is journalism at its poorest. As this person is indeed not interviewing anyone directly, but forming opinions instead. In addition the Maitland family’s underage children are being talked about on these blogs. One thing is for certain; lawsuits against bloggers are definitely on the rise. Virginia has seen several of these suits first hand. In the case of Cornell v. Sachs, Best-selling author Patricia Cornwell obtained a court order on Leslie R. Sachs from posting her name on his website. Sachs alleged that Cornwell plagiarized from his work, and that Cornwell was corrupt and was under investigation by Federal authorities. $35,780 in personal damages was awarded in the form of a judgment as Sachs fled the country to Belgium. In another case of Garrett v. Jacquith not only did they subpoena the blogger, but went after the information used to write the blogs articles and the identity and IP addresses of all commenters to and viewers of the article. In October 2010, local paranormal team Central Virginia Paranormal Investigations (CVAPI), performed a paranormal investigation in Chester, Virginia for the Maitland family. This case was later featured as “The Black Shadow” on Animal Planet’s Demon Exorcist. As stated several months ago, the family was indeed unhappy with how the show aired on television. A year later, Sarah Maitland has published their entire story. From Jackie Tomlin, “A year later, this family is doing very well, and Sarah and I do remain in contact with one another.” Sarah’s story is available for purchase here. Below you will find the interview from Jackie to Sarah on her story: What prompted you to write your story? “I felt that there was so much of the story that went untold on the show.” “We want other people going through our experience to know they are not alone.” “And hopefully my story will prompt other clergy, Demonologist, or whatever to step up and help these people because it really is a state of desperation these people are going through.” “Our case didn’t fit the “text book” haunting.” “We had more things going on that I felt needed to be documented medical attacks and people being hospitalized after an attack were something I had never heard about.” How did it feel to relive this nightmare when you were writing it? “ I never realized that you really do relive the experiences until I started writing.” “There were so many nights I would lay awake scared to death again.” “Haiven actually had a nosebleed at the exact time I was writing about her nosebleed episodes.” “That was a little unnerving.” Did you believe that haunts like this existed before this happened to your family? “I do.” “But I also believe that so many people are scared to talk about their experiences in fear of the critics or being told they are crazy.” “I’m not sure about the medical aspect of our experience because I really haven’t heard of any medical issues being related to the paranormal until we had it happen to us.” For families that are having these problems, do you think moving is the answer? Why or why not? “During the experiences, moving is the only answer for most people going through it.” “There was no possible way you could have made me believe a year ago that I would still be in this house today.” “I think if a family can be lucky enough to find the kind of help we found through you with Dwayne, then time is the answer and you will get your life back.” “But for those who aren’t lucky enough to find anyone to help without spending a fortune flying someone to their home, then I would think moving would be the answer.” “However, how are they to know “it” is not attached to a family member and won’t follow them to a new home?” Have you remained in contact with Dwayne Claud? “I have talked to him once or twice since he left.” “He was very nice and told us not to hesitate to call him if we are ever in need again.” Though the problems had started some time before, your investigation was in October of 2010. Marking the one-year anniversary, describe your family’s transitions in the last 12 months. “This time last year, we were all desperate for help.” “Our son had been hospitalized and we were stuck not knowing where to turn.” “Our home was in total chaos and we lived in fear 24/7.” “The investigation was bitter sweet.” “On one hand I was so glad that I was being validated, but on the other hand, I wasn’t expecting the growls or the word “death” coming out of our son’s room after he had already been attacked.” “It kind of put us on high alert after that.” “However, after Dwayne left I actually felt the difference within our home.” “I am usually a person who has to see to believe and I have to say even though I saw the difference in the feel of the home, I still stayed a little skeptical.” “But with time we all began healing and took one day at a time.” “Little things still happen here and there but nothing bad in nature so we don’t pay it much attention.” Would you say this entire experience has bought your family closer together? “Absolutely!” “It has shown us just how tough our children really are.” “Living through that kind of experience tears down a family quickly, but we really held it together and stayed united because we felt like we were all alone against the world at the time, so to speak.” On several occasions you have been accused of seeking “Fame and recognition”, what do you have to say to this? “Well at first it hurt.” “I wasn’t looking for fame or recognition other than to help get my story out for others who may be going through the same thing.” “Unless you go through it, you never fully understand the loneliness that is associated with the experience.” “When I started researching our experience on the computer, there was nothing that I could read that came close to what we were experiencing.” “Our experiences didn’t fit the documented cases.” “And therefore, some of the critics were not open to believing our story because of that.” “If I can open one person’s eyes to seeing there is no text book check list to a haunting, I feel it’s well worth anything the critics have to say.” “In closing to that question, the ones who have said that are also the same ones who have jumped onto my story and used it to try and get themselves recognized.” “So that aspect is pretty funny.” Through your entire experience, is there anything you would have done differently? “I really can’t say there is.” “We did what we had to do to get through the days and nights.” “I wish I would’ve gotten more proof or video but at the time, your really not thinking about any of that.” If a family were experiencing a negative haunt, what would you personally recommend? “Stick together, become united with your family!” “Don’t listen to outside influences that tell you how to live.” “If you have a living hell going on inside your home, and you want your children’s mattresses bought into your bedroom for their safety until things can be resolved, then do it.” “Stay diligent watching family members attitude changes, especially the little ones.” “I learned this the hard way when I found my 6 yr old holding a knife to my 8 yr old.” “Find a paranormal team that will not only come in and investigate but will also stick by you until the problem is resolved.” “Reach out to Mediums and paranormal teams that are genuinely wanting to help you and your family without paying a dime.” “There are people who really do that kind of work because they care and not because of profit.” © 2011-2020 Jackie Tomlin. As with most things in life, the paranormal tends to affect people differently. Only you can determine if you are scared of your surroundings or things that are occurring around you. The paranormal simply means the unexplained. Not everything is haunted or has a spirit in the location and some things can indeed be explained. For those that cannot explain occurrences it is common to reach out to a paranormal team. A common practice to assist with paranormal concerns is known as “Smudging”. This is done with a smudge stick. A smudge stick is a bundle of dried herbs tied together to form a stick. Though they can be made with any dried herb, the herb of choice in regards to paranormal concerns is white sage. Smudging comes from the Native American ceremonies. These ceremonies were used to remove negativity and to repel evil influences. Today there are thousands of paranormal teams located in the United States alone. Several of these teams have experimented with the art of smudging. From Jackie Tomlin of Central Virginia Paranormal Investigations (CVAPI), “Smudging is often thought of as a psychic practice when in fact it is a tradition of the Native Americans”. “I have not seen this practice remove spirits from locations, but I have indeed seen it quiet things down”. “Sometimes this will need to be repeated a few months down the road, depending upon the activity”. Smudge sticks can be purchased in any local herb shop, metaphysical store or online. There are many varying procedures into how one can smudge a location. The most common is by lighting the smudge stick and fanning its thick white smoke in the top corner of a room. Working counterclockwise, you would cover the top parameter with the thick smoke, crossing windows and entranceways. You would repeat this procedure in each room until you have covered every room in the location. From Jackie Tomlin, “Smudging can be used outside as well by smudging the parameter of the property line”. “I do not recommend this for those that suffer from asthma or any respiratory problems, the smoke is very thick and has a pungent smell”. There is no set rule into how you should smudge a location. To those that are not familiar with astrology, retrograde means a change in motion. Normally the planets move west-to-east at night through the stars. Periodically the motion changes to east-to-west, known as the retrograde motion. Mercury goes into retrograde this month on March 12th through April 5th. The planet Mercury is known as the planet of communication and also known to affect our thought process. In a nutshell, when Mercury goes into retrograde it hinders the natural flow. Due to this, people tend to associate this as a negative timeframe that they wait for it to pass and anticipate the worse. Working as a full time psychic, I am often approached with people that think their child may be psychic. Although there is no real “test” to see if this is so, there are some ways that you can tell. As adults we tend to close off any psychic abilities that we may carry for the fear of the unknown. Often psychic abilities can be tracked genetically by your family tree. However, do not become discouraged if you find nothing as psychic abilities are rarely discussed, even today. I can offer some insights to see if your child is psychic. Because children are very open minded and do not fear what is deemed as “wrong” by many, they tend to be very open and expressive in what they see and experience. Take the time to listen. Make a game of it. With a regular card deck pick out a card from the four suits and see if they can determine one or all of the cards. You can do the same thing with numbers or by using the colors of crayons and markers. Start a notebook to log some of their predictions. Can they tell you who is at the door or on the phone? Can they accurately predict an upcoming event? By all means, listen to their dreams, as these are often premonitions of what is to come. Take a healthy exploration into confirmations. Remember to be open-minded as it is rare to have parents that will nurture that ability. Do not criticize what you cannot see. If the accuracy is there, and you encourage it, this can indeed develop into a powerful useful tool. Spring is the perfect time of the year to begin new routines. Many have approached me about meditation, as well as steps to assist them in this process. In order to be successful with meditation, you must first clear your mind. This is the time when answers should come to you instead of you seeking the answers. There are many simple things that you can do in order to obtain clarity. You should begin with detoxifying your surroundings, and then yourself. Taking care of your “To do list”, and your spring cleaning will help you relax. One of the first places that you should detoxify is your closet. Take out anything that you have not worn in the past six months and donate it to charity. This includes clothes that are too small, too large, or make you feel less than awesome. Next move to your bathroom. Pitch out anything that is past the expiration date or that you no longer use. Apply this same procedure in your kitchen. Know when it is “Too much”. How many cake pans and coffee cups do you need? Now that you have addressed your surroundings, it is time to start with detoxifying yourself. Start with your relationships. Send a handwritten note to one you are thinking about, or tell a colleague that they’re doing a great job. This is the time to reach out to those that have been on your mind. The next step will be addressing your diet. This does not have to be for weight loss, although now is the time to shed a few pounds before summer. Cut out processed foods for a few days. Stick to fresh fruits, veggies, and whole grains and lean meat. Cut out the sodas and try water. You will probably be surprised how much better you will feel. Now it is time to address your mind and learn how to turn it off for a good nights sleep. Turn off your computer, cell phone, stereo and television thirty minutes before you go to bed. This will allow for a more relaxed sleep. If you follow the above steps, you will find that the meditation process comes easier than one might think! Members of Central Virginia Paranormal Investigations (CVAPI) went to see the movie “The Conjuring”. Since then, CVAPI has had numerous inquiries on what part of the movie they felt was real and what parts of the movie did they view as being fake. From Jackie Tomlin, “The movie did a great combination of showing paranormal activity in general, signs of sleep paralysis, and what could happen in a demonic haunt.” “Several things portrayed in the movie as paranormal activity we have witnessed, but not always on a negative haunt.” “For example, cold spots, sounds, reports of a full blown apparition, pictures falling, doors opening, orbs on photography, a child playing with something, and the fact that it targeted the women and children first, are all signs of paranormal activity.” “Those particular signs do not indicate a negative haunt.” CVAPI also referenced the scene in the movie where she awoke to a full-blown apparition would be a good example of sleep paralysis. From Jackie Tomlin, “I think they did a great job building the hype in the movie.” “A full blown possession is unlikely but always possible.” “Also noted that they had no dedicated religion in the movie, which is also common in negative cases.” “The fact that the activity occurred at 3: 07AM can be somewhat true, but in actuality paranormal activity does not seem to care about the hour it takes place.” “We have also had investigations that have haunted objects that does not indicate a negative haunt, and another that did have a negative haunt, so that could go either way.” CVAPI has a protocol that they follow in a negative haunt. From time to time, signs of a demonic haunt are discussed in their Ghost Hunting 101 presentation. The next Ghost Hunting 101 presentation is coming up in the month of October and open to the public. From Jackie Tomlin, “We don’t like to give out all of the signs of a negative or demonic haunt, just for the facts of the reports we get for investigation requests.” “I can say some of the signs that were in the movie including bad smell, birds flying into the window, family pets dieing, bruises and bite marks, and problems heating the home, are some of the signs that we have seen before.” “There again, the signs are numerous, it is also common that family members are sleeping in one room, or have left the location.” CVAPI believes that the producer’s did a great job on this movie. A lot of what was featured as paranormal activity, they have experienced before. From Jackie Tomlin, “There are scenes in the movie that we are not onboard with, but cannot say they could not happen.” “I can say that in the instance of a negative haunt, the most significant changes will only occur when a family takes a unified front, and stands behind their faith.” Keep your eye on their website for the date and location of Ghost Hunting 101 in October. The paranormal show “A Haunting” first aired on the Discovery Network in December of 2005. Season 7, is currently airing on Discovery’s Destination America. Produced by New Dominion Pictures, CEO Nicholas Valcour, out of Suffolk Virginia. Erin Hull, employee of New Dominion Pictures and former researcher of “A Haunting” has taken the time for an exclusive interview with Jackie Tomlin. Erin, what is it like to hear everyone’s paranormal stories? “I interviewed a gentleman named Rod, and I would have to quote him.” “ He described the whole paranormal arena perfectly. “ He said, “At times you feel helpless, and then there are moments when the paranormal is magnificent!” “I hear their sadness, pain, anger, fear, and horror.” “My heart hurts because they relive their terror moment by moment, second by second.” “I admire all of those interviewed for their high level of personal strength.” “They truly face their greatest fears that most could never comprehend.” What are you looking for during those interviews? “What points of their experience need to be included in that one-hour episode.” “The details and the impact of what they have gone through.” Once the story is selected, and the interviews are filmed, what happens next? “Everything that is said is transcribed for a pre-production meeting.” So what happens during the pre-production meeting? “It is a meeting where the details and the impact of the show are discussed.” “The plot of the story.” “Location, casting, and the budget.” “Then filming begins again.” How long does it take to fully create one episode from start to finish? “That would be hard to say.” “It depends on the deadline of our schedule.” Is it safe to say that it would be months after filming before an episode actually airs? “Always.” “After all the filming is done it goes to post production.” “This is where the episode comes together.” “Out of all of the filming, it is a collaborated effort from creative people working together as to what is used.” “It takes numerous people to get one episode done.” What is your personal opinion of what draws viewers to the show? “Intrigue.” “Even skeptics may have had an experience that will cause them to look for proof.” Paranormal teams report many problems with working with audio and video files. Does New Dominion Pictures report technical problems and if so, do you feel it is related to the paranormal? “I have heard of some technical problems that are inexplicable.” “But I cannot say whether or not they are related to the paranormal.” How would you describe your personal experience as a researcher? “It is important to have people that can retell those experiences and bring them to television.” “During those interviews, every detail matters.” “A Haunting is nothing without the interviewees strength.” What can the viewers continue to look for in Season 7? “Season 7 consists of 16 new episodes.” “I personally think they are bringing the show back with more strength.” “It allows you to watch it, and relive those experiences.” “It is the connection to that fear of the unknown.” Season 7 is currently airing on Destination America on Sunday nights at 10pm.
